Hockey, the sport that introduced Ghana to the world, first, in any sporting event worth all effort, targeted at making it a loved sport by many. In honoring the sport, for the many opportunities it has offered to people that have come into contact with, birth an idea called Ball and Stick.
It is very unfortunate that, hockey is under the category of lesser known sport in Ghana, despite its lush history. By this categorization, it is evident that, interest in hockey dwindled along the way due to less activities focused on growing the game.
Not too long ago, it was common to see hockey being played in most communities in Accra. Pozo Sticks is one of the many examples of clubs formed out of community hockey. Again, in almost every secondary school across the nation, hockey was a prominent feature in school sports but unluckily for us, that too has changed significantly. I never saw a hockey stick or heard about the game during my secondary school days in Oda Secondary School (2003 to 2006). Today, I can say it is optional and very few secondary schools are involved in it.
Ball and Stick exist to change the status quo and to revive what was once vibrant. Very dry soil cannot efficiently absorb water, it is therefore very important that, we introduce hockey at the basic level and train participants with the right skills that will reduce the highest risk of fatality which is imperative to advancing the course needed to scrape the tag on hockey as being a dangerous game.
I extend an invitation to you, please join us, let’s grow and enjoy hockey. The Action you have always Imagined is here through Ball and Stick.
